Why we started

Millions of people read Nepali every day, yet many still type it by hunting for keys, copying from converters, or falling back to romanized English. Government exams such as Lok Sewa, newsroom jobs and many office roles now expect fluent Unicode Nepali typing. Most existing tutors were built for English and added Devanagari later. We wanted a tool designed for Nepali from the very first key.

Nepali also has features that English typing tutors never deal with. Vowel signs (matras) attach to consonants. The short-i sign (ि) appears before the letter but is typed after it. Conjuncts like क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ get their own keys, and the halant (्) joins letters into half-forms. A good Nepali course has to teach these directly, not leave learners to work them out alone.

What you can do here

What makes it different

1

Accuracy before speed

Every drill rewards clean keystrokes first. Speed follows once you stop having to fix mistakes.

2

Small, daily wins

Lessons are short enough to finish during a tea break, so keeping a streak is always realistic.

3

Built for Devanagari

Matras, half-letters and conjuncts are taught as core skills from the start.

4

Private by default

How the course is designed

The lessons follow the traditional Devanagari varga order (क-वर्ग, च-वर्ग, ट-वर्ग, त-वर्ग, प-वर्ग), so learners work with the alphabet in the order they already know from school. Each lesson introduces only a few new keys, mixes them with keys you have already learned, and shows a colour-coded keyboard with animated hands so you can see which finger should press next.

Once the consonants are familiar, the course adds independent vowels, then matras, then the halant and conjunct letters, and finally numerals, punctuation and long passages. Results use net words per minute (five keystrokes count as one word, minus uncorrected errors), the same way most typing exams measure speed.

Which keyboard layout we teach

We teach the Traditional Nepali Unicode layout, the most widely used standard in government offices, Lok Sewa practical exams and newsrooms. In this layout the home row types a = ब, s = क, d = म, f = ा and so on. Because it produces real Unicode text, what you type works in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, email, websites and social media with no font conversion. See every key in the visual key guide.

Who it is for

  • Students preparing for computer-operator, Lok Sewa and school practical exams.
  • Professionals who write letters, notices, minutes and reports in Nepali.
  • Journalists and content creators writing articles, captions and scripts in Devanagari.
  • Teachers who want a free, structured resource for computer classes.
  • Nepali families abroad who want their children to keep using the script.

How we keep it free

The core lessons, drills, tests and games will always be free. The site uses modern, lightweight web technology, so it loads quickly even on slow mobile data and works on any laptop or desktop browser without installing anything.

Our commitments

  • We will never sell your personal data. Read our Privacy Policy.
  • We fix reported errors in lesson content as quickly as we can.
  • We keep the site accessible, with keyboard navigation, readable contrast and screen-reader labels.
  • We describe our speed scores honestly. See our Disclaimer.
